Why Is My Heater Blowing Cold Air?

When temperatures drop, the last thing you want is for your heater to start blowing cold air. Unfortunately, this is a common issue homeowners face. Understanding the possible causes of this issue is the first step in getting your system back in working order.

Here are possible reasons a heater blows cold air.

Incorrect Thermostat Setting

The thermostat is the first thing you should check when your heater stops working as it should. It’s surprisingly common for this device to be set incorrectly without the homeowner realizing it. Set your thermostat to “heat” and “auto” instead of “on.” Also, double-check the temperature setting to ensure it aligns with your comfort level.

Clogged Filters

A filthy filter can significantly impact your HVAC system’s performance. Over time, dirt and debris can build up on the filter, restricting airflow within your home. As a result, the heat exchanger could overheat, causing the system’s safety mechanism to shut down the heater or blow cold air as a precaution. Routinely replacing or cleaning HVAC filters can save you from this issue and improve your unit’s efficiency and indoor air quality.

Pilot Light or Ignition Problems

Issues with the pilot light or electric ignition system can cause a heater to produce cold air. When these components malfunction, your equipment won’t be able to generate heat. While relighting the pilot light might be a simple fix, addressing ignition system problems often requires professional assistance.

Overheating System

When too much dirt accumulates within the system or a mechanical failure occurs, the furnace can shut down to prevent damage or a potential fire hazard. This safety mechanism stops the unit from producing heat. Regular inspections and maintenance can help identify parts that need repairs or replacement.

Faulty Gas Supply

Gas furnaces need a sufficient natural gas supply to function properly. Interruptions or problems with the gas supply can keep the furnace from igniting. If you suspect a gas supply issue, contact professionals immediately for your safety.
