There you are, just living life, and flipping on your AC every year when it gets too hot. What would happen if your air conditioner just died? You could actually get ahead of that and not have to sweat for weeks while you figure out what to do next. Watch for signs that your AC needs to be replaced.
You could set your air conditioner for fifty degrees, but your house is no colder than it is outside. Maybe it’s a few degrees cooler inside if you close your drapes all day, but it’s certainly not due to the air coming out of the vents. When you can’t get the temperature in your house to drop, your air conditioner just isn’t working anymore.
When your AC is so old that your HVAC technician can’t refill or recharge the refrigerant, it’s time to let the unit go. Usually, it’s because the refrigerant type you need is no longer available, or it was made illegal for use. Regardless of the reason, there’s no way you can make the unit function and produce cold air again.
If you do have an HVAC technician look at the AC unit and it’s determined that there are tons of holes in the lines and components, the unit is done. Those holes contribute to leaks and a lack of cooled air making it back inside your home. The holes can’t be patched, and parts might cost almost as much as a new air conditioner. It’s just not cost-effective to fix, especially if the unit is already past its prime. The cost to replace is far more reasonable when you consider that the new unit will have many good years ahead of it.
